Are you mishitting?

How many of you are confident with your speed control on putts over 15 paces? Is the challenge to your nerves over testing 3-footers or leaving yourself with too many 3 and 4-footers in the round?

“Get the feel before your round”

Justin Bevier, Head Professional, Las Colinas CC

“Before starting your round, spend a few minutes on the practice putting green ‘rolling it to the edge’. Take 3 or 4 balls and pick an edge of the putting green at least 15 paces away. You’re not aiming at a hole. You’re aiming to get the ball to finish as close to the edge of the putting green as possible. Spend a few minutes repeating this drill several times before your round.”

"I’d also recommend coming down to the practice green separate from your round. Repeat the drill but also check that you’re hitting the sweet spot with each putt. A great drill to practice hitting the sweet spot is the 'putting gate'."

“Using two tees, as shown above, make some simple 3-foot putts with the putter passing between the tees without touching them. Then move back to 6 feet and repeat. Then back to 9 feet. And so on. This will help you make consistent contact with the sweet spot which is one of the keys to distance control.”

Invest in ‘fun’ practice
